Brief History of DepartmentThe Post-Graduate Department of Geography was started in 1959-60 at Maharaja’s College with the efforts of Prof.Nazeer Ahmed, Prof. G.K.Ghori and Mr.Salar Masood and later shifted to Manasagangotri Campus in the year 1962-63. It is the first and the oldest Geography department in Karnataka and second in the whole of South India. In the beginning, the classes were conducted at Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion and shifted to the present place in the year 1966. Dr.R.P.Mishra took over the headship of the department in 1965. Under his able leadership the department achieved good progress. Prof.Mishra, by his untiring efforts and dynamism placed the Geography department on the map of world Universities. He advocated Regional Planning and Developmental Studies to greater heights and as a result, the institute of Development Studies (IDS), with an interdisciplinary approach emerged as an off-shoot of the Department of Geography. He brought men and resources from far and wide to develop the department. Departmental research activitiesThe department is engaged in research activities in various field of Geography. Currently more than 16 foreign students are working for their Ph.D program. The total number of research scholars working in the department is around 37. The teachers have also taken major and minor research projects from UGC and University. The teachers have published number of research papers in various national and international journals. For the last ten years the total number of research papers published so far is around 60. Department has established contacts with three foreign Universities. Especially with French and German Universities. As the department is entered in to Chairs/Fellowship/Medals (if any)Three Gold Medals are instituted for the top Scorer in M.Sc Examination Best Practices (if any)1) Personality development programs have been conducted for the students on a regular basis Individual teacher’s on-going research projects
